Billboards are not safe

Image: Steve Rosenthal

Billboards are not safe, 7 days and counting…On April 2nd, the city will be abuzz with large scale art replacing advertising billboards as part of EC Arts project - 48Sheet.

Up to 100 hundred billboards around Birmingham are waiting to have their traditional adverts pasted over by the exciting artwork of established and emerging artists both local and international.  Above image is a sneak preview of 48Sheet artwork by artist Steve Rosenthal (London).

From the 2nd April come down to the 48 Sheet project space at the Mailbox to find out more about the project; utilise the online map we have created to locate the billboards; whether on foot or bike there will be a route for you to feast on this banquet of art without missing a thing. Quiet & busy corners of the city will now be alive with the monumental images, and four of the artists will be creating live 3D installs.  Keep an eye on the Events page and on twitter @48SHEET_ for updates and information

Work in progress

48Sheet project space at The Mailbox coming together nicely…

Saturday 10th March BIAD students James Gill, Yiqin Zheng, Leah Carless, Theodora Pangou created work for the walls out by pasting, tearing and layering old 48Sheet posters with artist Matt Watkins.  Special thanks to the brilliant Sarah Noakes (EC Arts intern) who has been working really hard painting, scraping and sweating over the floor  for weeks to lay the foundations for the space to be pulled together…. more work to be done in preparation for April!

The space will be the official hub for 48Sheet, it’s intention to culminate into a gallery of the project evolving over weeks prior to April as 48Sheet artists create work in response to the space or project.

The space will be open to all from the 2 – 28 April, we will advertise the April programme of events by the 20th March on www.48sheet.com.  More information and a map with recommended walking/cycling routes of the billboards to follow!

Faith Pearson workshop – Calthorpe School

Artist Faith Pearson returned to Calthorpe School this week and has been busy painting with some of the pupils, which be featuring in the 48SHEET project.

The pupils have been contributing to Faiths artwork by drawing, colouring and painting onto a billboard sized cardboard mock up which will be used as the sky, in the final piece.

After a messy and fun morning the finished results look great and we look forward to seeing them in the final artwork.

Faith Pearson

Faith Pearson, 48SHEET featured artist has been busy collaborating with Alderman Bowen and Calthorpe School over the last couple of months to engage young people and adults by providing participation opportunities within her artistic process.

The result has been incredible, the groups have contributed to Faith’s work.  The piece below is the exact size of a 48SHEET billboard.  We hope to exhibit part of the piece within The Mailbox space in April.

Tom Tebby’s black book

48SHEET artist Tom Tebby dropped into the Wharfside project space earlier in the week to talk through his process and work to date on the commission.  We were blown away by his little medium black book of fantastic drawings – which has been cut down to 48SHEET size, we would tell you the exact ratio but we were too distracted by the content of the book to remember.

The sketch book contains 48 pages of sketches (nice).  The artists thought process has been focussed on ‘movement’

The drawings range from intricate layers to slightly aggressive, and the ‘randoms’ the artist referred to were almost archigramic.

We cant wait to see the end result.
